SMOKING...
...is it really so great?
Harsh, maybe, but from a financial point of view smoking is down right stupid. Whenever you inhale a cigarette, you are literally burning money. Think about it: one pack a day; one pack is seven dollars (for the cheap stuff); 7 packs a week is already $50, and multiply that times the 52 weeks in a year and you're spending nearly $3000 on smokes.
I like to think it isn't. Smoking. The word makes you cringe, so why is it in this day and age people still insist on smoking? Do they think it makes them cool? Do they think it makes them attractive? Do they think that people respect them for it? I don't know, and I hope I never will, but let's take a look at all the downsides of smoking first.
Sooooo anyone sees those numbers and they're going to say ''Oh my God that's a kit if money!'' They're right. $3000, aka an extremely nice vacation, a downpayment on a car, or a car altogether! But even aside from finances, there are tonnes of reason why not to smoke. Health reasons are the main one. Countless diseases and ailments are linked to smoking. Let's take a look.
Cigarettes contain over 4800 chemicals, 68 of which are known to cause cancer. Smoking is responsible for 90% of all lung cancer deaths. Chronic lung disease accounts for 73% of smoking related conditions. Pulmonary disease, coronary heart disease, stroke, abdominal aortic aneurysm, acute myeloid, leukemia, cataract, pneumonia, periodontitis, and bladder, esophageal, laryngeal, lung, oral, throat, cervical, kidney, stomach, and pancreatic cancers are caused by smoking.
So why do we still smoke! We've been given hundreds of reasons for decades, so why? Well, statistics show that looks have a lot to do with it. Once upon a time smoking was regarded as ''a respectable thing to do,'' but that ancient image has changed. It is said that smoking is a turnoff in 75% of people, so something that was once seen as ''respectable'' is more like revolting in this day and age.
Smoking does things to the way you look too! It causes wrinkling, yellow nails, rough dry skin, hair loss (that's for women too!), eczema , red blotchiness in the skin, greyish coloured skin, and ir causes weight loss! If you're looking to loose a few pounds though, don't turn to smoking. It's just killing you a different way.
So then what IS the upside to smoking? Well if you want to look weathered, have lung disease, and die prematurely, then I guess there are three, but if you aren't looking to die, there is NO upside to smoking. Steer clear of the stick, and you won't become its victim.
