What is the meaning behind graffiti?Graffiti is often a comment on current social issues in the world around us. Students will choose a social issue that is important to them, and create their graffiti art around that issue.
What IS graffiti art?Graffiti is an art movement that exploded into the public eye in the 70s. It is a form of art and stylized writing that is usually found on city walls and train cars. It is often created illegally.
History
Project OverviewStudents will learn about the art of graffiti and why it is important in the art world. They will learn that graffiti is often driven by the artist's want to express his or herself about certain social issues that affects him or her. Students will learn the difference between public art and deviant art and why graffiti is often illegal. Students will develop their graffiti skills, individually, using oil pastels and paint. Then they will work together, in small groups, to create a 4x8 murals centered around a social issue that affects them.
