Cell Growth and Division
During the G1 phase, cells increase in size and make organelles and proteins.
Mitosis is the division of one nucleus into two. It is divided into 4 phases.
1. Prophase- Chromosomes bcome visible, centrioles take place on opposite sides of cell. 2. Metaphase- Chromosomes line up across the center of the cell. 3. Anaphase- Sister chromatids split, become individual chromosomes, and move to opposite sides of the cell. 4. Telophase- Chromosomes disperse, nucleolus becomes visible in each daughter cell.
During the S phase, chromosomes are replicated and DNA is made. Key proteins are also synthesized.
Regulated by proteins called cyclins. Internal regulators respond to events inside the cell. External regulators respond to events outside the cell. These regulators speed up or slow down the cell cycle.
Cytokinesis is the final division of the cytoplasm, when the membrane is pinched off and becomes two daughter cells.
