Genetics

Genetics is the scientific study of how traits are passed down from parent to to offspring. Through DNA, parents pass on genes to their offspring that determine the offspring's traits.

What is Genetics?

Gregor Mendel made the first essential findings in gentics with pea plants. By crossing pea plants that were of different height, or produced different seeds, he was able to determine how the traits were passed on. He discovered that certain traits are dominant, and others recessive, and that recessive traits can be ''carried'' by an organism without that organism actually displaying that trait.

Who discovered genetics?

Punnett squares are a way to determine what offspring might result from a cross between two parents with different genes. This Punnett square shows a cross between two organisms with Aa alleles. A is the dominant trait, ex. tallness, and a is the recessive trait, ex. shortness. The dominant gene will always show through, even when paired with a recessive gene. So, the AA organism would be tall, the Aa organism would also be tall, and the aa organism would be short.
