Ellis Island was once a hanging ground for pirates and later a fort protecting New York's harbor. It became a gateway to America in 1892 when it was opened to admit immigrants coming to America to start a new life. It was both a welcoming place and a place to be feared because newcomers that came to America had to prove they were healthy and that they had some means of supporting themselves in their new country. Ellis Island underwent many changes until it closed in 1954. In 1965 President Lyndon Johnson officially proclaimed Ellis Island as part of the Statue of Liberty Monument. It took many more years but eventually became a museum and a monument to all who passed through its doors.
Ellis Island
1907 to 1954 This book tells the story of Ellis Island from colonial times to the present. It concentrates on the peak immigrant years from Jan. 1, 1902 when 15 year old Anne Moore of Ireland arrived until 1954 when congress shut down saying it had ''served its purpose.''
Ellis Island: The Immigrant Years By: Bill Severn Published by: Julian Messner (a division of Simon and Schuster.) 1971
An indepth factual story of the history of Ellis Island. Mr. Severn gives the actual history of the Island. It contains the facts and dates which document the massive immigration to the US for a period starting in the late 19th centry until winding down in the mid 20th century.
Mr. Severn looks at the difficulties faced by immigrants arriving through Ellis Island. He explains how their entrance onto the island was not always what they had hoped for. He cites immigration laws and how they changed over time and how they affected those arriving, hoping for new life in the land of plenty.
I would recommend this book to others. This book taught me a lot about Ellis Island and the immigration there. It also taught me about the struggles and difficulties people made to start a new life in America. If you want to learn about Ellis Island and the immigration process there, you should read this book!
The story of Ellis Island immigrants has ties to todays society. Immigrants continue to come to the US looking for a new home. Just as immigrants a century ago helped settle land, advance in agruculture, developed business and industry to make us the land we are. Immigrants today will help make us the land we will become.
