In the 1950's, Americans were afraid of Communism. They feared that they themselves would become Communist. During this time, there was a lot of anti-communist propaganda as seen above. Although people were not hung if they were suspected to be Communist, many suspected Communists lost thier jobs and could not work.
Many were hanged because they were suspected of witchcraft. People who knew those accused were not witches chose not to speak out for fear of being called a witch as well.
Fear affects everyone.
