International Neglect
Dear Guatemala, We, the international community, did nothing because we did not know about the genocide. For this reason , the Guatemalan genocide is also called, 'The Silent Holocaust.' Sincerely, The International Community P.S. Those who did know about it were either killed (Indigenous Guatemalan), killing (Spanish Guatemalan), or watching (Marxist Guatemalans). The Marxist rebels (UGNR) did not have the sheer numbers needed to challenge the government amidst the slaughter, so they did nothing. The army committed 93% of the atrocities, but some Marxists participated because the Indians had no wish to be communist. There was no media coverage at all. The only photos of the genocide were taken in the aftermath.
