Lessons
One woman (or man) can have the power to make a difference, for good, or in Guatemala’s case, bad very, very bad. Greed, money, and privilege corrupted the Spanish Guatemalans to a point where they would rather stain their hands in blood then to suffer ‘lowly’ Indians to be their equals. They could easily brush aside the Church or any that stood in their way because money became more sacred than God. The American CIA and corporations are just as guilty. Also, prosecuting a dictator does not guarantee justice. Garcia died quietly in Venezuela, and Montt was re-elected. He was perfectly clean in the eyes of the law. A wedge has been driven between the Spanish Guatemalans and the Indigenous Guatemalans. The Spanish Guatemalans are working towards equality. They are showing that they still consider the Indians inferior, and they would annihilate them agian. Nothing has been solved at all.
