Lorenzo de Medici (Lorenzo the Magnificent)
Lorenzo was a young man who helped control the Florence country by his power over manipulation. He would get into the government by strategic marriages, payoffs and blackmail.. He took freedoms from the people and took money by taxing them outrageously. Some people in the Empire resented his control over them and began a conspiracy. Later the members of this conspiracy, including an archbishop, attempt to attack Lorenzo. Fortunatly Lorenzo survived with a knife wound but his advisor, Giuliano, was killed.
Lorenzo helped artists and writers during the renaissance get secure commissions. These artists were in his political court and they included: Piero Antonio del Pollaiuolo, Andrea del Verrocchio, Leonardo da Vinci, Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio, and Michelangelo Buonarroti. Also, Lorenzo wrote poetry in his native tounge of Tuscan. He compiled works from many artists including some of his own work to make the Medici Library. He had people copy these works and share them with the rest of Europe while supporting humanism.
His Personal Life!
He first married Clarice Orsini and had 9 children with her. His second marriage, after Clarice had died, was to Philippina Savoy who was the daughter of the reigning duke but they did not have any children together. Two of his sons became powerful Popes. His second son, Giovanni, became Pope Leo X and his adopted son Giulio became Pope Clement VII
