A Day In The Life:
of a law enforcment officer
Interview: Me: Did you have volunteering experience? How did this prepare you to be a police officer? Kroll: No Me: what is the most important aspects of being a police officer? Kroll: as cheesy as it sounds, helping people, Especially Helping Kids in need. Me: how do you cope with stressful situations involved with your job? Kroll: I spend time talking to colleagues and friends and I also love to shop as a stress reliever. Me: briefly describe the qualifications and requirements that you had to complete to be a law enforcement officer Kroll: for part time, I first had to pass an interview out of a panel of people and then I was selected from that pool to have an additional interview with the chief. From the part time pool they select the full time shift. Once selected for a full time position you must attend the full 21 week academy. Me: describe the worst situation you have encountered in a work place and how did u deal with it? Kroll: When you find a dead body, the officer needs to stay with that body until the coroner or someone comes to retrieve. One time I got stuck in the back of a woods vehicle with someone who had committed suicide. I had to sit with this dead guy for 4 hours. How did I deal with it? Humor, that’s how I deal with most uncomfortable or stressful situations at work. Me: using examples, what is the most rewarding part of your job as a law enforcement officer? Kroll: for me it’s about building relations with kids in the school system. My goal is to break the barrier and teach kids not to fear policemen, I am here to help. When I applied to be a cop I had this job unparticular in mind. I’m really interested in helping kids get through life. Me: what is the change for advancement in your field? Kroll: Not Very good in this small town. There are only 4 sergeant positions, requiring 3+ years’ of work and1chief.the lutenant position was eliminated in 2010 to save money, however none of those 4 positions have union protection. Me: what personal qualities and traits if any make someone better able for this line of work? Kroll: Friendly, open to listening, good communication, approachable, trustworthy. Me: what qualities, traits, history or background make someone less suited for this career? Kroll: Severe drug/ crime record or extreme temper or aggression. Me: How do you feel about possibly having to take someone’s life in the line of duty? Kroll: if that’s what it takes to protect yourself or others, then so be it. Me: How do the tasks and responsibilities differ between state and town cops? Kroll: Town cops have less people and so everyone does every job which is good because everyone knows how to do everything whereas state cops have enough people to separately train groups of people for different positions.
Written Report: To many law enforcement officers in the field, their job is more then just a career, it is a job they do to help people and contribute to society. First, there are many non-educational requirements of a person for them to qualify to be a police officer. This person must have no criminal or drug record (which there can sometimes be exceptions to). The applicant must be in top physical and mental condition. They must be a citizen of the United States and at least 21 years of age. Also many background checks are done such as checks of driving history, credit score, and military experience. Next, a good deal of education is required to enter this profession. First a high school diploma must be present. Contrary to popular belief a college degree is not mandatory but in many places you can make a higher hourly wage with a degree in criminal justice. With an associates degree you many on average 10% more annually, with a bachelors degree you can make up to 15% more annually and with a masters degree you can make up to a whopping 25% more money annually. In our town and in many places a physical fitness test is not required but if completed well you can also collect more money annually. Also in many places the completion of a civil service test is required but not in our town. Then if you’re accepted, comes training at the police academy, this consists of classroom hours focused on, civil rights and local laws, investigative techniques, field training such as self defense and fire-arm use, and defensive driving. Before you can apply for a job there is a certain amount of experience that is prefers usually two or more of the following, positive experiences and feedback of culture, valid drivers license, stable work history, ability to solve problems, community or youth involvement or public speaking/conflict resolution skills. Lastly, I had an interview with officer Kroll: Me: Did you have volunteering experience? How did this prepare you to be a police officer?
