The Silk Road
The red lines show the land routes and the blue lines show the ocean routes
MOTIVES FOR INTERACTION: The Silk road was a network of trading routes used to transport goods all over the eastern civilizations. The main motive for trading between kingdoms was the desire for new goods that they had never seen before. Each kingdom would trade things they had a large abundance of with things they could not find on their own land. This later led to religious integration and cultural diversity between empires.
Conditions for travelers: The Silk Road had several divisions, two of which were The East Silk Road and the West Silk Road. The conditions for traders on the silk road were very rough. When travels would cross the East Silk road, they often road in caravans and used camels to carry their goods. By crossing the dessert, merchants faced deadly sandstorms or lack of water for days. The West Silk Road was made up of mountains. Travels used yaks to carry their goods. Some dangers travelers faced were headaches, dizziness, and lack of oxygen due to the elevation. The West Silk Road was also known as the "trail of bones" since travelers and their animals would often died trying to cross its treacherous peaks.
Consequences: There were many outcomes of the Silk Road. In short time the merchants and travelers exchanged goods and became rich with new merchandise like silk, satin, jewels, glassware, spices, medicines and slaves. While exchanging goods, the merchants from different kingdoms also spread diseases and virus' from one to another. In a longer period of time, religions such as Buddhism had spread across the east eventually planting in east Asia. Cultural traditions and customs from places like Rome and the Fertile Cresant were exchanged with people as far east as Indonesia. Overall, the Silk Road may have been created for trading, but it ended up exchanging much, much more.
