The name Latvia originates from the anciet Latgalians, oone of four eastern Baltic tribes that formed the ethnic of the Latvian people. The region subseqently came under the control of the Germans, Poles, Swedes and finally, Russians. A Latvian republic emerged after WWI, but it was annexed by the USSR in 1940- an action never relizied by the US and many other counries. Lavia reestablished its independencce in 1991 following the breakup of the Soviet Union. Althgh the last Russians troops left in 1994, the status of the Russian minority remains of concern to Moscow. Lavia joine both NATO and the EU in the Spring of 2004.
