Some students at a school in Hazelwood School District wrote a school newspaper for a project in their journalism class. The students talked about teen pregnancy and the impact of divorce on kids. The principal objected these stories, saying that it was inappropriate for younger students and unfair to the pregnant students who might be identified by the text of the article. Three of the students protested by suing the school, saying it was a violation of the First Amendment. By a 5-3 vote in Congress the students were overruled. Congress gave them power to censor school-sponsored publications.
