Dear Glog, I'm writing a report on the book called Black Wind by Clive Cussler and Dirk Cussler. This book is very interesting because it starts off by flashback to the last year of World War II.
BOOK REVIEW OF HISTORICAL ACCURACY This novel is a fiction book. It is based around made up events that took place during World War II. Adventure aids in outlining these events. Clive's novels have more action and adventure in them that are built off of a premise that is usually discussed in the beginning of the book that has to do with historical backrounds but all details are entirely fiction. In Black Wind, a historically accurate premise event was a detailed flashback of a Japanese submarine making a last desperate attempt to defeat the United States in World War II. THIS BOOK IS COMPLETELY FICTION!!!!!!!! (but I will describe the events anyway)
CITATION: Cussler, Clive, and Dirk Cussler. Black Wind. New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 2004.
The book starts out flashback on board with the crew of the I-403 (Japanese sub) back in 1945 in Cape Flattery, Washington. Next comes to present day in Alaska where CDC workers and NUMA workers are researching and eventually come in contact with the past of the I-403 and figure out it's carrying deadly toxins that are poisoning to Alaskan inhabatants at the time of their researching . Also, Korea is part of the settings where antagonists plan there wants
Dirk and the other marine biologists searched for the chemical that was killing sea lions and people in Alaska. Dirk contacted a friend and marine historian of his to reveal any uses of chemical toxins within the war times. One of the Japanese subs contained toxins and Dirk and his coworker Dalgren explored the sub. Kang became aware of them coming on to their track of releasing toxins and small pox/HIV viruses in the U.S. Kang tried to kill them but ended up beaten by some U.S. SEAL members once they figured out Kang's plot (discussed in the tan passage at the right).
The characters within the novel include father and son Dirk Pitt and Dirk Pitt Jr., CDC worker and specialist Sarah Matson, several marine biologists, coworkers of Dirk and Dirk Jr., terrorists from Korea, and at the end of the novel, U.S. SEAL members, who helped with the capturing of Kang (the business man talked about in the passage at the right). Several Japanese wreaks located at the bottom of the ocean were one of the main items focused on in the story. Kang was trying to release a terrorist attack on the U.S. in coorespondance with his own efforts to combine North and South Korea.
The country of Korea was specifically focused on within the novel. References were made to the separated North and South of Korea. They included a historically fiction aspect: one high-up and greedy business man wanted to rejoin the North and South in order to excel his own business enterprises. The end of the book gives a great fictional, yet very realistic view of Korea dealing with the outcome of the business man's defeat., which included ways the country must recover from the business calamities after the man's name was banned from everything and his businesses were turned into other places.
Aspects of book include dates and times and places that Japanese subs attacked the U.S. (one specific sub: I-403)
As previously mentioned, this book is completely fiction. However, it is very realistic with the places and events that took place within it. If it were historical fiction, I would say that the historical perspective would be of Korea's issues with Kang's plan to release viruses within the U.S. and NUMA high rank worker Dirk Pitt and Dirk Pitt Jr. Records of the battles and etc. with the U.S. and Japan in WWII, in this book, were very realistic.
Tying this book to today's society is easy. Without all the high tech equipment the NUMA members had (including sonar fishes, navigation equipment, charts and maps that interact with the ocean, etc.) they wouldn't have been able to contribute to the present day theories and info in all sorts of books about the oceans today.
BOOK'S HISTORICAL (FICTIONAL) EVENTS In 1942: several of Japan's subs attacked the U.S.: the I-17 @ Santa Barbara, I-25 @ Astoria, Oregon, I-26@Vancouver, I-25nearCape Blanco, Oregon(after the I-26 attack) In 1943: Aleutian campaign-subs at Attu and Kiska In 1944: I-180 fought and lost at Kodiak Alaska In 1945: I-403 planned to attack but was hit by a U.S. destroyer at Cape Flattery, Washington
RECOMMENDATION I recommend this book to anyone who is willing to take some time to read a very large book. I think that the way the story unfolds, the details, and how realistic everything was, including the historical fiction events, were mind boggling and fantastic. The historical fiction events that cooresponded with WWII tricked me into thinking that they actually happened as descriped in thiis book. I also loved all of the scientific methods and equipment used on some of Dirk's journey. It really gave me a great overview of how science and marine biology works today. It was action packed, thrilling , and adventureous. I loved it!!
