1920's Movies

Movies were starting to become a "big" thing in the 1920's.With the end of World War I not too far away, people wanted to relax and have some fun and this was a big part of how to do it. Most movies in the 20's silent movies (in black and white) though synchronized sound started to start during this decade.

Movies were usually accompanied by live piano or organ performances until sound started gaining popularity at the end of the 20's. (Chaplin at the Piano to the right)

Even in the 20's movies, actors were well renowned and well paid. Even now we remember great actors such as Charlie Chaplin.

The first theatres were called Nickelodeons and were no where near as luxurious as the movie theatres that shortly preceded them.

1927 was a bad year for the movie making industry. Radios seemed to be appealing more and more people over films. In 1928, movies with sound known as "talkies" were being produced which quickly helped the movie industry regain its former position.

The 1920s represented the era of greatest output in the US movie market.. By 1927, Hollywood was the' largest center of production where around 85% of movies were produced in the US.

Clara Bow (to the right) was a very popular actress and model, she starred in her first film, ''Down to the Sea in Ships'', in 1923. In 1927 she starred in the movie "It" which contained sexual themes and was immediately dubbed the "It" girl (It was synonomous with sex appeal).
