Awards and Honors: In January 1999 Lois received the John W. Gardner Leadewrship Award for her selfless work at the Love Canal and the Center for Health Enviorment and Justice, IN February 1999 Lois was inducted into the Western New York Womens Hall of Fame. Lois has also received the Heinz award for demonstrating important citizen activists, She received outstanding citizen award 1980, citizen of the year, Health Advocate award, OUTSIDE magazines honor roll- Ten who made a difference, Princeton community award and Christopher’s Award Environmental Issue: Lois dealed with hazardous waste. Toxic waste was being dumped in the Love Canal near Niagara Falls, New York. This was a major problem because many people became ill. Benefits: Lois stopped toxic waste being built up. The Love Canal became clean and many people became better. Lois stop many hazardous chemicals that were being left in Niagara Falls. Steps Taken: Steps Taken: Lois attended public meetings and press conferences. Lois also negotiated with the Governor, appeared on television ,testified before Congress and spoke at colleges.
