Gaylord Nelson Educatiion: o Gaylord attended Clear Lake highschool and graduated in 1934. Afterwords he attended San Jose State College in California. Early Interests o Fought in World War 2 o Ran for seat in state assembly o Was governor of Wisconsin and used his power to preserve wiscon’s natural resources. Honors and awards: o He started the National Wildlife Association and the United Nations Environmental program. He Earned the presidental medal of Freedom. Earth Day: o Earth day is a national day were people clean up our world. o Gaylord Nelson organized campaigns to get Earth Day started. o Helped people realize that they had to 'clean up' to make our Earth beatiful again. Reasons or needs for Goal: o As U.S senator very few people had rules or laws to preserve the environment o There were no programs to help issues like water pollution, air toxic waste, and other bad things. Environmental Goals oWanted to help Wisconsin become cleaner. o Became “Father of Earth Day” came up with Earth Day to help Preserve/keep Earth clean. Birth Date: May 4th, 1916, born in Clear Lake, Wisconsin Died: July 3rd, 2005 Steps taken to reach Goal: o In 1963 Nelson made an important speech to his fellow senators in order to inform them to create a national program to preserve the country/s natural resources. o He persuaded President John F.
