It was granted the status of a university in 1974. The University now awards bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. It is a Carnegie Doctoral/Research-Intensive institution. The State of Mississippi gained control of the college in 1940 in order to train teachers. The University’s current name was adopted in 1979.
Athletics/Sports Played: Men's baseball, basketball, football, golf, indoor track, outdoor track, tennis, and cross country. Women's basketball, bowling, golf, indoor track, outdoor track, soccer, softball, tennis, vollyball, and cross country. Nickname/Mascot: Jackson State University's mascot is the tiger.

Things to do: On campus you can always go to the JSU sports home games or events, there are also hundreds of events during the year put on by the Greek organizations and other organizations around campus. Off of campus in Jackson you can go to the Jackson Convention Center to see a show, you could shop in one of the many shopping centers in Jackson, of you can eat at one of the many amazing restaurants in Jackson.
