Mean auntie: Mean Auntie is fat as shabanu describes her; she is mean and follows traditions harshly. For example when they met one of their aunties, she wouldn’t greet her well or talk to her, she would only say negative things about her
Mama: is loving and caring. She’s thankful because her husband loves her and treats her fairly, even though she has 2 daughters. She’s very strong inside and out and she knows the difference from right and wrong. She isn’t under aunties influence and ignores her negative comments about certain things
Dadi: daddy is strong, personal and caring. He treats his wife fairly unlike any other men who hurt women if they don’t follow their rules. He also didn’t harm his wife even if she gave him two girls. He was thankful for them and didn’t reject. His actions are mostly followed by reasonable explanations. Such as him getting mad at Shabanu when she wasn’t supposed to be around during their trip at the shrine.
Shabanu: Shabanu is a wise, loving and caring character. She shares her thoughts with us since she’s written the story from her point of view. She loves the camels and her favorite are Mithoo and Guluban who was sold. She is very sympathetic and can’t stand seeing any one sad. She hates her mean auntie and thinks that she’s too fat but on the other hand she adores her auntie Sharma, from her mum’s side, and her daughter Fatima.
Phulan: Phulan is more laid back and does what is expected of her. She listens to what her parents say and follows customs and traditions with without rebelling. She is attractive, charismatic and graceful as shabanu mentions when she is choosing a scarf for her sister. She is mostly indifferent because she isn’t really sharing her personal passions with any member in the family which gives us a vibe that she isn’t passionate and seems to be going through rituals without rebelling.
Grandfather: Grandfather seemed to be a fierce fighter, he had a big imagination. He made his stories sound so true even if they didn’t exist. He had a caring personality he loved his grandchildren and he liked his sons wife as if she were his own daughter. He was a decent man and treated the others fairly and wasn’t mean or strict. He also loved his wife and his camel Kalu.
