Scientific Notation

When do we use it?

To write decimals that are very laaaaaarge, or very small

Express numbers using powers of 10

Keep track of decimals

If the exponent of 10 is positive, the number will be > / = 10. Move the decimal point to the right.

How do we use it?

Scientific to Standard

Move the decimal the number of places shown in the exponent of 10

If the exponent of 10 is negative, the number will be < 1

If the number is > / = to 10, Make the exponent positive and move the decimal point left.

843 000 000 = 8.43 x 108

If the number is less than 1, Make the exponent negative. move the decimal point to the right.0.000 000 000 131=1.31 x 10-10

Move the decimal until the number is >1 & <10
