The Statue of David, the Finest Creation Ever Made
David is a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture sculpted by Michelangelo from 1501 to 1504. The 5.17 meter marble statue portrays the Biblical King David. Unlike previous creations of David, which show the hero after his victory over Goliath, Michelangelo chose to represent David before the fight contemplating the battle to come. The statue came to symbolize the defense of civil liberties in the Florentine Republic. The completed sculpture was unveiled on September 8, 1504. Michelangelo's David differs from previous representations in that David is not shown with the slain Goliath. Instead of being shown victorious over an enemy much larger than he, David looks tense and ready for combat. His veins bulge out of his lowered right hand and the twist of his body effectively shows to the viewer the feeling that he is in motion. The statue is meant to show David after he has made the decision to fight Goliath but before the battle has actually taken place. However, other experts consider the creation to represent the moment immediately after battle, as David contemplates his victory. Michelangelo's David is based on artistic drawings of the male human. He considered sculpture to be the highest form of art because it mimics divine creation. David stands with one leg holding his full weight and the other leg relaxed. This classic pose causes the David’s hips and shoulders to rest at opposite angles, giving a subtle s-curve to the entire mid-section. This creation is important to renaissance because it is one of the first creations that truly shows the beauty of the human body. This was also important to renaissance because it inspired other artists and sculptors to follow the same trend of style. This is one reason why renaissance art came to be. This impacts the way we view the world today because artists still can look back at this sculpture and realize that they need to include elegance and nature in their art designs. They can also choose, if they wish, to emphasize the beauty of the human body. Michelangelo’s David has become one of the most recognized pieces of Renaissance Sculpture, becoming a symbol of both strength and youthful human beauty.
