Poster Justification
JOURNAL ENTRIES –ADVERTISING POSTER Step-by-step process 14.10.09 •I decided on my topic – Global Warming •I found the pictures I need for my poster and have two different ideas for my poster • I created my base for the first idea on the computer 16.10.09 •I designed my second idea and started working on it •I added more to my first idea 17.10.09 •I finished my visual effects for my first and second idea •I chose the colour scheme for both of them. •I reviewed both of my posters carefully, but decided the more original and visually dynamic one was my first idea •I deleted my second idea once I was definitely sure of which was the better poster 18.10.09 •I remembered there were meant to be verbal parts to my poster •The poster already had words, but I personally thought I needed more words to make my point more clear •Then I thought of a slogan •The edges of the poster looked a bit blank so I added a frame •Then my poster was finished 19.10.2009 •I perfected my poster even more •I wrote the rest of the explanations AIM: To promote awareness of global warming and what we are doing to our planet and thus ourselves and the next generation IDEAS: My idea was to create a simple, yet effective poster that would stand out and make the targeted audience think about their personal lifestyle at the moment. The audience my poster is targeted for is everyone who is responsible for certain aspects of their life. As in, whether you recycle your rubbish, use up fuels, drive cars, pay your power bill, etc. VERBAL TECHNIQUES: The verbal techniques I used were: •Parallel structure – TO ENFORCE THE IDEA •The “short and sweet” slogan – MAKE IT EASIER TO REMEMBER •A pun, through the words ‘Danger. Toxic Hazard’ (This is partially a visual technique as well, because one doesn’t work unless the other is in use*) – BOTH OF THE LATTER EFFECTS AND TO MAKE IT MORE INTERESTING VISUAL TECHNIQUES The visual techniques I used were: •Bold colour scheme-TO ATTRACT ATTENTION •Visual pun (see above *) , through the sign with the earth in it-MAKE IT MORE INTERESTING AND EASIER TO REMEMBER •Different fonts and size of text-TO CONTRAST THE DIFFERENT MESSAGES AND DRAW ATTENTION TO DIFFERENT AREAS •Simple shapes –TO HELP IT TO BE MORE EASY TO STICK IN YOUR BRAIN •Colours that reflect against each other and thus are eye catching-TO DRAW ATTENTION TO THE POSTER •Symmetry-TO MAKE IT LOOK MORE PROFESSIONAL AND THUS HELP PEOPLE TO THINK THAT THIS IS A SERIOUS MATTER CONNOTATIONS AND REASONS FOR COLOURS: •YELLOW: happiness, when we are confronted with too much yellow we become annoyed or angered. Yellow typically symbolizes sunlight, joy, happiness, earth, optimism, intelligence, summer, air, hazards, greed, decay or aging, hazard signs. •BLACK: death (in Western cultures), fear, emptiness, darkness, seriousness, sorrow. •WHITE: light, reverence, purity, truth, snow, peace, innocence, cleanliness, simplicity, security, humility, sterility, winter, coldness, surrender, fearfulness, unimaginative, air, death (in Eastern cultures), life, hope, bland, empty. YOU MAY HAVE NOTICED THAT SOME OF THESE CONNOTATIONS ARE THE SAME. THE UNDERLINED WORDS ARE THE ONES WITH THE MOST SIGNIFICANCE TO US, EARTH AND GLOBAL WARMING The main reason I chose these colours was because they stood out against each other and because yellow and black are the colours of the hazard sign. It was only after I finished the poster I decided to uncover some of the connotations of these colours to help deepen the meaning of this global issue PROBLEMS AND CHALLENGES: I did not really have any problems or challenges. My biggest worry was trying to get everything there could be in the poster. A problem I had was trying to blend all the different yellows I got from the different pictures into one colour. If you look closely you can see this. (Please do not look closely) FINAL OUTCOME I personally am extremely pleased with the final outcome. The shade of yellow I chose is complimentary and eye catching. The different layering of the colours (yellow-black-yellow-black) brings out the prominence of the Earth and thus the problem with the Earth. The shadowing of the Earth and subtle blurring of the edge stands out against the straight cut edges and the basic shapes. Triangles are usually used as the shape of stop signs. This symbolises that we need to stop our current way of life and need to start doing something about global warming. I do like how I used the Earth in the place of the skull in the skull ‘n’ crossbones sign in the middle of the Toxic Hazard Sign. This visual/verbal pun is quite clever and represents a lot. I am very happy with my font and colour choice for my slogan. The font is ‘Chiller’ which in its name itself symbolises a lot. It is the only white and unsymmetrical part to my poster apart from the Earth. The slogan itself also makes a personal connection with you and forces you into considering your future. Global warming mainly started because of humanity’s greed. My poster suggests that if you save Earth you can save yourself. This brings out a reaction with selfish protective people amongst my targeted audience. All in all, I believe that this poster if ever published would capture people’s attention, make them think about it and draw public notice to the plight of global warming – which was my posters aim in the first place.
