Aspartame: The Killer Sweet Tooth

Congress has the sole ability to completely ban aspartame on a national level. This ban would have to originate as a bill proposed from a Congressman and be approved by a Committee, a general vote, and the President. Once the bill passes, the FDAwould have the task of executing the ban. This would require inspection of food products and processing plants to ensure the complete removal of aspartame.

Throught the whole process, interest groups play a pivital role in the formation, implementation and enaction of this policy. Interest groups can lobby both Congress and FDA, and can work during any policy evaluation by the courts to keep the policy through briefs.

Executive and Legislative Branches of Government

First, the policy would have to be added from the public agenda to the Congressional agendy, mostly by spreading awareness to congress members and pressure from constituents. Then, the policy wouold be proposed by a congress member and developed and reviewed by multiple committees. After Congress adopts the policy, the executive branch would take up the responsibilty of implementing it. This would be done by the FDA and other Departemnt of Health agencies. Finally, court cases or pulbic studies would evaluate the effectiveness and necessity of the policy in America.
