African American soldiers were subject to much discrimination during the war.
Wilson created the Committee on Public Information (CPI) which was used to organize public opinion.

FAST FACTS Facts: 1. The CPI urged Americans to become "un-hyphenated" Americans. 2. The Women's Peace Party was founded in 1915 and by feminists apposed to the preparedness campaign. It was dissolved before the war. 3. When the war was declared, there were only 200,000 men in the army. By the end of the war, 24 million men registered. 4. 2 million Americans volunteered for various armed forces. 5. More than 200,000 African Americans eventually served in France, but only 1/5 saw battle. 6. Within a year, shipping tonnage lost each month to submarine warfare had been reduced to 200,000. 7. No American soldiers were lost on the way to Europe. 8. The brutal power of modern military technology had made trench warfare inevitable from 1914-1917. 9. In early June 1918, about 70,000 AEF soldiers helped the French stop the Germans in various battles. 10. About 2/3 of US soldiers saw atleast some fighting, but even they managed to avoid the horrors of the sustained trench warfare.
At the start of the war, there were only a small number of men in the armed forces, this resulted in a draft, causing the number to doubled from 1917 to the end of the war.
