In 1945, a revolutionary new law was announced - the one about the integration of public schools. It was supposed to allow blacks to go the same schools as whites.
The Little Rock Incident
By 1957, almost all public schools were desegregated, however, the integration of Little Rock Central High Schools was yet to come.
On its reopening in September, nine black children were about to sign in, but armed guards blocked them to the order of Governor Faubus, in order to 'prevent bloodshed'
A few days later, when he finally withdrew the guards, a white mob of 1000 were waiting outside the school and started a riot.
The local police acted half-heartedly to punish the ones beyond control, so President Eisenhower had a few members of the National Guard to guard the black kids.
Although heavily guarded by armed guards, not even they could protect them from the everyday bully, so eventually only 3 of them managed to graduate.
Faubus was re-elected governor in 1956 with 80 percent of the votes!
There were several more riots in the '50-es - the most important was in Calumet Park, when a white mob of 5000 attacked 100 blacks. Luckily, there weren't many injuries.
