Trans Saharan Trade
The purpose for Trans Saharan Trade was for people to trade goods across the Saharan Desert. The mediterranean countries, which were rich in salt, needed gold. In order to get the gold they used the Trans Saharan route to transport it home. Slaves were also commonly traded aross this route. Travelling conditions were very harsh and in order to make the journey, caravans of 1,000 or more camels were assembled to make the long trip easier. This route was very helpful for all communities because if there was anything needed then they had a clear path in order to trade with other people. Prosperous towns such as Timbuktu were formed along the route for trading.
