Blue Ridge, Georgia. The News Observer April 17, 1994 – Two 3rd grade students are making history by being the first ever contestants of the Blue Ridge Elementary Academic Bowl to ever beat a 5th grade team. Last week, two students, Zachary Taylor and Alison Dunn, were nominated by their 3rd grade classmates to represent the entire grade level in the yearly, school wide academic bowl. “We knew Zach and Alison were smart, but we definitely didn't think they could beat the 4th and 5th grade teams...” said Ashley Stanley, a classmate of Alison and Zach. “No one ever beats the 5th graders, it's never even fair!” several students told reporters. However, the next Thursday, when the day to compete came, the two third graders showed the school, and the community, that anything is possible. It was a sweeping victory. In a Jeopardy style game, Taylor and Dunn rang in on over 80% of questions, and answered over 70% of them correctly, leaving the other 5 grades represented in the dust. “It was really fun,” says Alison, “after a while, we would just ring in as soon as the question was over.” “If I didn't know the question, Alison would,” Zach added. The entire school is in disbelief. With even other grades and teachers admiring their success. “Even though they beat our best kids, I'm certainly proud of them,” said Mrs. Jones, a 4th grade reading teacher. “I can't wait to see where they go over the next few years. Their futures are certainly bright,” boasted Principal Robert Foster. For additional information, see the full article at brtno.com. Or contact senior editor James Madison at the following...
