Gonorrhea
Gonorrhea Information Page! 1. General Information-In 2007, the current number for Americans infected with gonorrhea was 355,991 which is down .7% from 2006. Gonorrhea is the 2nd most commonly reported STD in the United States. 2. Cause- The main reason that Gonorrhea is causing this epidemic to spread is the lack of education on gonorrhea. Even though it is the second most common STD in America, most people do not even know that they have gonorrhea because some warning signs are not visible to the naked eye. The infection is exactly caused by polymorphonuclear leukocyte bacteria latching onto healthy cells and then multiplying or going into the stages of mitosis. 3. Transmission-The disease is transmitted through unprotected oral, anal and vaginal sex with an infected person. It can also be spread from an infected mother to her baby during birth. 4. Signs and symptoms-Most men and women do not show any symptoms but if any are shown, they may include; Rectal pain, itching and bleeding discharge, Vaginal bleeding or pain, Yellowish-white vaginal discharge, Discharge from the penis, Burning when urinating, and Painful/swollen testicles. 5. Complications- Untreated gonorrhea can cause Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) in women, which can cause chronic pelvic pain, infertility and ectopic pregnancy. Also, Gonorrhea can be passed from mother to child during birth, which causes serious eye infections or blindness. For men, gonorrhea can cause prostatitis as well as epididymitis (inflammation of a small organ which sits at the top of the testes) which can cause infertility. In both sexes, gonorrhea can infect joints, skin, heart and brain and cause permanent damage. Also gonorrhea increases the risks of transmitting HIV. 6. Treatments-Oral antibiotics can usually cure a gonorrhea infection in just one dose, but it can be reacquired immediately after treatment. Some may be resistant to certain antibiotics. Your recent sexual partners should also be informed as they may require testing and/or treatment. 7. Incubation Period- Most signs and symptoms for gonorrhea can remain unseen for weeks but some can begin to see some type of warning signs anywhere from 2 to 30 days. 8. Solution- The main way to solve this issue in the United States is to always use a condom and use protection. Also, more and more women are beginning to use female condoms. Experts say that this is another safe sex practice to avoid gonorrhea. 9. Hotline-HIV/STD 800-243-2437
