Villi Microvilli Ciliac Disease
Villi are finger-like projections that can be found inside the small intestine. The function of villi is to increase the total surface area over volume ratio, so the digested food can be absorbed faster and more efficient.ly
Microvilli are small, hairlike substances found in large numbers on the free surfaces of many cells. They serve to increase the surface area-to-volume ratio of a cell and increase absorption rates.
Ciliac disease is a condition in which the individual is gulten intolerant and when they consume gluten, it erodes their villi and damages their small intestine. The cause for gluten intolerance has not been scientifically proven, but studies show it is linked to chromosone 6.
Villi increase the surface area 30 fold. Microvilli increase the surface area 600 fold.
Lactose intolerance can be a conplication of ciliac disese. When the villi are damaged they can no longer produce the enzyme lactase which helps digest lactose.
To allow gluten intolerant people to live normal lives mnay companies produce gluten free cosmetics. Ciliac disease in children can also cause stunted growth . Among women with ciliac disease rates of miscarrage increase.
