Biographical Information Before Presidency ~ Born October 1st, 1924 in Plains, Georgia ~Father was a business man and farmer & Mother was a registered nurse ~Attended Southwestern College ~Joined the Navy and became a submariner ~July 7,1946-Married Rosalynn Smith of Plains ~1953- father died and resigned naval commission to return home ~Took over family business Carter Peanut Farms ~1962-Won election for Georgia Senate ~Became Georgia’s seventy-sixth governor on January 12th,1971 ~1974- Was the Democratic National Committee campaign chairman ~Won presidential election on November 2nd, 1976 ~Inaugurated on January 20th, 1977 ~Wrote a book called Why Not the Best? in 1975
