Native American Reservations
-Since white settlers found some of the reservation lands desirable, eventually the reservation areas shrunk to about 132 million acres by around the 1880's and down to about 55.7 million acres today. -There are 310 reservations today mostly in tthe four corners area, Great Lakes area, Northwest, and Oklahoma. The area of the reservations is about 2.3% of the U.S. land. -The Indian Reorganization Act of 1934 gave more rights to the Native Americans and allowed them to have more rights to self govern themselves. The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act was passed in 1988 which allowed legalized gambling on reservations.
- I n 1851 the Indian Appropriations Act was passed by the U.S. Congress which allowed for the creation of Indian reservations. -These reservations were designated for use specifically for Native American tribes. Oklahoma had a large concentration of Indians on reservations. - Some Indians signed treaties and agreed to go to the reservations and some fought for the right to their own lands. -They were promised many things in the treaties, but many died of disease, starvation, and they lost their way of life. For most Native Americans, the change to reservation life was traumatic.
Native Americans were stripped of their lands and forced to live on reservations.
