What Happened to The Buffalo? When gold was discovered in California, settlers came pouring out of the west. To improve the traveling conditions, the U. S. government decided to build a railroad across all of the United States. This split the great buffalo herd into the northern and southern herds. To provide food for the workers, hired workers such as Buffalo Bill killed thousands of buffalo. Some were slaughtered for their hides, and even just for the fun of killing them. By 1878, the southern buffalo herd was almost gone and the northern herd was gone by 1883. The native americans were starving and many of them died.
