Ephilates told Xerxes of another rout around the pass of Thermopylae. Xerxes led more than half of his army through the alternate route to attack the Greek forces from the rear. Leonidas learned about what the Persians were doing and fled the battle seen alone. The battle at Thermopyale ended when the last 300 Spartan soldiers were killed on the front line. The distraction from the 300 Spartan soldiers gave enough time for the remainder of the Greek army to retreat South into the southern part of Greece.
