Walt Whitman was born May 31, 1819. He was born in Long Island, New York. he lived with a family of eleven and was the second oldest. He lived in Brooklyn and Long Island in the 1820s and the 1830s. He attended public schools until the age of eleven and never had anymore formal schooling after that. He learned to spell and punctuate in the printing office. He fell in love with writing at the age of 12. He worked as a printer until there was a fire that burned down the industry. He became a teacher at age 17 in the one roomed school houses. In 1841 he began a lifelong career in journalism. He founded a newspaper called Brooklyn Freeman. He wrote poems and freelance journalism. He stayed and worked in the hospitals after the war because he felt sad for all of the wounded. He struggled to support himselfand his family throughout his life. Walt whitman died on March 26, 1892 of miliary tuberculosis and other small factors. He was one of the greatest American poets of all time. It was never said that Walt Whitman wasn't happy or that he was a depressed man. It was also never made clear if he was truly a bisexual or if those were rumors because it was never proved that he had a real sexual relaionship with a man. Walt was sort of a mystery. We aren't sure about his love life other than the fact he fell in love with writing. He loved the written and printed word.
