A family torn apart by an illness
My Sister's Keeper
Lost in a world too old for her, 13 year old Anna Fitzgerald has to deal with a huge burden- she wouldn't have been born if her older sister Kate hadn't been diagnosed with Leukaemia and needed an exact match for blood and bone marrow.
Anna was conceived to save her sisters life. As she enters her teenage years, Anna becomes sick of the constant operations and blood transfusions that keep taking place for Kate's sake.
Anna begins to question herself, who she is, and what she really wants to be her purpose in life, rather than being just Kate's life line. She makes the life changing decision of suing her parents for the rights to her own body.
By Jodi Picoult
My Sister's Keeper is a riveting, powerful novel that keeps you interested from start to finish. The story is told from lots of different character's points of view which makes it all the more gripping and emotional. The writing is philosophical and thoughtful, and the storyline is completely original. I recommend this book to any or all young adults.
'' It made me wonder though, what would have happened if Kate had been healthy? Certainly I would not be part of this family. See, unlike the rest of the free world, I didn't get here by accident. And if your parents have you for a reason, then that reason better exist. ''
'' Because once it's gone, so are you. ''
