After his disastrous date with Sally, Holden goes on to get drunk and accidentally smashes the record he bought his sister Phoebe in Central Park. In his detriment he carries the pieces with him as he goes to his family's apartment and sneak in to visit Phoebe, who lends him her christmas money to get back on his feet as he's spent most of his own in the past 2 nights and flunked out of school yet again.
This scene is significant due to Holden's catastrophe, which by his own hand destroyed what he cared most about; making his sister happy. The symbol however is that of Holden's reluctance to mature, though in doing so he ruined a precious moment due to his immaturity, despite how unintentional it was, providing a sad realization of what he must do to maintain his individuality and his relationship with his sister since his anti-"phony" behaviour has started to make him into someone he isn't.
