The morning after Holden meets Phoebe at home he decides to meet her one last time before leaving to live on his own.Dissuaded by Phoebe, Holden decides to stay, and in their last moments together decide to go to the Central Park Zoo and once there, our last scene is that of Holden crying while watching Phoebe on the Carousel.
The symbolism in this last chapter is pivotal, revealing at long last Holden's acceptance of his and Phoebe's futures. After watching Phoebe try to grab the gold rind Holden finally realizes that to grow up he has got to take risks, which he had been afraid of all this time.
