The Preamble
The writers of the Constitution decided to break up the powers. They desided to have a representative democracy; where the power rested with the people. Secound they decided to have a federal system; this gave the individual states power, so that the government diden't have all the power. At the end, they devided the federal government in three branches. They keep track over each other, so that no one of them can become too powerful.
The American Congress consists of two “chambers”; the House of Representatives and the Senate. The reason behind this compromise, was that the smaller states were afraid of being controlled by the larger states. The number of representatives each state got in the House of Representatives was based on the population in that state. In the Senate each state was given two representatives no matter its size. That way, the smaller states could defend their interests. Members of the House of Representatives are called Congressmen, and today there are 435 members. Members of the Senate are called Senators. There are 100 members, two from each of the 50 states. The President is chosen every four years by national election. The President has great, but not unlimited, powers. The President is: Head of State, Chief Executive, Commander-in-chief and Chief Diplomat.
