Why is Lent so important for ChristiansToday?
Ash Wednesday Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent.. It gets its name from the ritual that Christians do, whereby they burn the crosses from last year;s palms from Palm Sunday. The priest then puts ash on the forehead of the congregation . They then say sorry for their sins and ask for forgiveness from god. The use of ash shows that is a reminderthat people are no more than ash compared with god.
What is Lent? Lent is a 40 day period of preparation, leadiing up to Easter. It is a time for giving up luxuries to remember the 40 days that Jesus was in the desert, even though the devil tempted him, but he only ate simple foods. Holy Week is the week before Easter. It starts on Palm Sunday. The most important days of Holy Week are Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.
Palm Sunday Also known as Passion Sunday, this day commemorates, Jesus' return from the wilderness and ride into Jerusalem on a donkey. People laid down palm leaves on the road , so that the donkey did not have to walk on the dusty road. and so to make a path for the Messiah. It is important because they are celebrating his return and not giving up hope.
Maundy Thursday On this day, the Last Supper is remembered, when Jesus and his disciples enjoyed a meal and had Holy Communion together. The communion was performed according to Jesus' wishes to remember him. This reminds that this was the last meal that he had with his friends and followers and the price that he paid for Christians. Christians remember when Jesus' washed his disciples feet. and some people do still do wash each other's feet.. If Jesus helped his disciples, Christians should help each other. Peter didn't want Jesus to wash hos feet because he thought that he should be serving Jesus, not Jesus serving him.
Good Friday This day is the most solemn day as it commemorates Jesus' crucifixion.. Its was called 'Good' because Christians believe that it opened a way to heaven when the Messiah died. A cross is the symbol for Jesus' death as Christ was crucified.
