Politics of the Ancient Games
The Olympics were more than just Athletic competition, they were a time for the citizens of the Greek-city states to assemble. They discussed political issues, but more importantly, there was a sense of unity.
The Olympic Truce was instituted by the city-state of Elis. Its purpose was to protect against military attacks that interrupted the Games. Special meesengers were sent out every four years to announce the games and the Truce.
