How is an earthquake created? An earthquake is a tremor in the earth’s crust. Earthquakes are the earth’s means of releasing stress. More than a million earthquakes occur around the world every year. Earthquakes are caused by movements below the earth’s surface. Earthquakes can vary in intensity from activity which can be barely detected even using sophisticated equipment, to extremely dangerous earthquakes which can trigger tsunamis and even volcanic activity. Our earth is made up of layers. What we live on is the crust which has plates. There are about 20 plates along the earth’s surface that continuously move slowly past each other. When the plates stretch or squeeze, huge rocks form at their edges and the rocks shift with tremendous force, causing an earthquake. The stress is released as energy which moves through the earth in the form of waves. This is what we feel and what we call an earthquake. Plates drift from place to place, breaking apart, colliding and grinding against each other. The plates all move in different directions and at different speeds. Sometimes the plates crash into others or sideswipe each other. When this happens, it mainly results in earthquakes. Earthquakes can be dangerous and can cause serious damage. One earthquake in China has been known to claim over 12,000 lives. So if you ever get caught in an earthquake, crawl under a table or stand under a doorway in your house and be prepared!!!
