The Elizabethan Chronicles
2 dimes
On July the 19th, the Spanish Armada were spotted on the coast of Plymouth. Our great sailors realised that over 130 ships were sailing in a crescent shape for protection, but little did the Spanish men know that the shape would let them down. The beacons were immediately lit all along the English coast on that day. On the other hand, Francis Drake was accused of having an ineffective fleet of the Plymouth coast, but of course this was untrue. On the 4th August, a strong wind made our English ships suffer and the Spanish move even quicker, but we would never give up. Medina Sedonia was a Spanish admiral, who told his fleet to put down there anchors as they were in low ammunition, but they could not do that. So after this there crescent shape had unformed on they were open to attack. The communication was awfully terrible. So Medina was left to rely on his friend, the Duke of Parma and his troops to arrive. After this, Francis Drake had a brilliant idea because the Spanish fleet had let down there anchors, the English could light a fire to the Spanish fleet. As the Armada saw the ships on fire approaching, so they all made an effort to break out and save themselves. This made the attack so much easier. Even though only one ship was lost it, it had put the rest of the fleet to shame. Even worst weather helped the Armada to escape. Medina Sedonia had written that they were “saved by the weather and by God’s mercy”. This was a weak and thin excuse for an admiral to make. This was the first time that Medina Sedonia had been on a ship, so why was he chosen in the first place? In the end of the battle, the English were victorious once again!!
