During the Cultural Revolution, many of China’s intellectuals were sent for “re-education”, which mainly consisted of cleaning and listening to communist propaganda. During this time period, Chinese literature “hit (the) bottom” , and the only literature that was written was used to build the “ideal, classless society” (Lau). However, as soon as the Cultural Revolution ended, people began to write freely. At this point, authors’ writing began to fall into 5 distinct areas, Literature of the Wounded, Humanistic Literature, Social Criticism, Seeking Roots, and Reportage. .Literature of the Wounded was writing that spoke of the pain people went through during the CR and was demonstrated through these literary pieces. Humanistic Literature was an area dominated by women writers. These stories were about human emotion, since during the CR, emotion was considered to be worth less than politics. Social Criticism exhibited the dark side of Chinese society after the CR and its social problems, such as alienated youth and the loneliness of the elderly. Authors whose works fell into the Seeking Roots group mainly wrote about rural communities and their lives. Reportage was a way of showing the strengths and weaknesses of the Chinese through recording the Chinese way of life. It showed all of the different parts of hundreds of people who made up China’s culture. China's literary explosion after the CR showed the realease of expression and represented China's opening up to the world, The 5 groups came into being because of the harsh Cultural Revolution. So, in a way, the Cultural Revolution taught the people of China how important expressive literature and heartfelt emotion is. The explosion of literature showed the strength and diversity of China's culture..
