Prince Henry the Navigator By Ian J.S.
Prince Henry was a Portuguese Prince who was very important in the early Portuguese Empire. Prince Henry was responsible for the beginning of European explorations, which then led to colonization of distant lands. He also sponsored expeditions down the western coast of Africa. Prince Henry and his love for exploration opened a school for mapmaking, shipbuilding and navigations.
Prince Henry sponsored voyages down the coast of West Africa that were primarily exploration expeditions..Prince Henry was also interested in the profits of his voyages. His expeditions teams would bring back goods such as silver, spices, oriential rugs, slaves but mostly importantly gold.. He sponsored expedtions that would go beyond the known world and cross over into the unknown..
Prince Henry realized that his ships were too slow and heavy to maneuver or make long voyages. Under his direction, a new and much lighter ship was developed. The new ship was called caravel, which would allow sea captains to sail faster and further than before. Most of the voyages sent out consisted of one or two ships that navigated by following the coast. They would stop at night to tie up along shore.
