Mathematics in Ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt Ian Brennan Mathematics in Ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt Ian Brennan
Ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt were three successful civilizations. Ancient Egypt was the earliest and existed from 3150 BC to 31 BC. Ancient Greece existed from 1100 BC to 146 BC. Ancient Rome, which conquered both these civilizations existed from the 10th century BC to the 5th century AD. Mathematics helped these civilizations build the structures they are famous for. It helped them live easier and healthier lives. Without mathematics, these civilizations would not have been so prosperous. Mathematics helped these civilizations in many different ways. Architecture in these civilizations could not have existed without their knowledge of geometry, algebra, and many other aspects of mathematics. These civilizations’ inventions would not have been invented without several different subjects of mathematics. Daily life would not have been as easy as it was without their knowledge of mathematics. Mathematics contributed to all of these civilizations greatly. None of the architecture that makes all three of these civilizations renowned could have existed if these civilizations had no knowledge of mathematics. Ancient Egyptian architects used their knowledge of geometry and weight to design the Pyramids, the Hypostyle Hall at Karnak with its pillars and statues, and the temples and palaces. Ancient Greek architects used the same mathematical knowledge to erect famous temples like the Parthenon. The Roman architects used the same mathematic methods as the Greeks to design their temples such as the Pantheon as well. Mathematics was required to build these famous structures, without the civilizations would not have been so prosperous. Some of Ancient Egypt’s, Greece’s and Rome’s most famous inventions were aided by mathematics. Ancient Egypt’s invention of the ox drawn plow required geometry. Without this knowledge, the plow would not have operated correctly. Ancient Rome’s bridges could not have existed without use of mathematics. Bridges require geometry and weight. Ancient Rome’s well-known aqueducts also required mathematics to construct. Geometry and weight were also used to construct these water systems. Mathematics clearly aided these civilizations in their inventions. The civilizations used mathematics in their inventions all the time, inventions that they profited from greatly. This proves that mathematics greatly benefitted these ancient civilizations. Mathematics helped daily life in the ancient civilizations. The Ancient Roman pipe system made daily life in Ancient Rome much easier. The pipe system required correct measurements to reach people’s homes and also more measurements to keep the pipes always going downhill. Mathematical knowledge made life in Ancient Rome easier and healthier by providing fresh water in homes so people would not have to travel or steal to acquire it. Ancient Greece’s shower was a great improvement to daily life in Greece giving citizens the option to bathe without having to pour water on oneself. Mathematics was used to make the right pipe lengths so they would reach far enough and so that they would always go downhill. Hunting was common in Ancient Egypt. Hunters used a variety of weapons such as spears and arrows. Mathematics was used in making these weapons to find the correct angles of the arrowheads to successfully pierce the skin of the game. Mathematics made daily life in the ancient civilizations much easier. It is clear that Ancient Rome, Greece, and Egypt would not have flourished without their knowledge of mathematics. Mathematics was responsible for their architecture, inventions, and easier daily life. Mathematics was important because if these civilizations didn’t have their knowledge, they would not have survived as long. Our civilization takes many things from these civilizations as well. If these civilizations didn’t survive we would not have either. Mathematics is mandatory for a successful society.
