Endocrine system
Hormones like Vasopressin, Thyrotropin, Insulin, Prolactin, Oxytocin, Adrenaline, and Glucagons are very important in the Endocrine system. Hormones are responsible for regulating your: -metabolism (process of breaking down food and getting energy from it) -mood -growth -organ functions
Functions
Endocrine System- is in charge of making sure that the body’s many functions are coordinated properly The endocrine system is made up of 8 major glands -pituitary gland, thyroid gland, adrenal glands, pineal gland, pancreas, thymus, parathyroid, ovaries and testes -The glands produce over 30 different kinds of hormones each one with its special job
-Hypothalamus it monitors the body and sends information to the pituitary gland -Ptuitary gland sends out its own chemical messages and rules most of the actions of the endocrine glands -Thyroid- releases hormones that control how fast your body cells burn energy (affects how fast parts of your body grow and develop) -Parathyroid gland- keep the level of calcium leveled in your body, if your blood has too much or to little calcium your nerves and muscles don’t work right
Glands
Hormones are chemical messengers which are produced in the glands, the target cells travel through the bloodstream they to reach their target cells -Vasopressin- hormone that is hiden by the pituitary gland that raises blood pressure, and reduces the excretion of urine -Thyrotropin- regulates and stimulates the thyroid gland - Insulin – regulates the metabolism or carbohydrates and fats; conversion of glucose (sugar)
-Glucagons- regulation in blood glucose levels in the pancreas -Prolactin- in females it regulates the process of milk in females -Oxytocin- smooths the muscle of the uterus during pregnancy and help release breast milk -Adrenaline- this hormone is released in response to mental or physical stress
-Delayed puberty- when puberty takes a little longer than usual to begin its process -Adrenal Tumors- they overproduce hormones; make to much adrenal and can lead to cancer -Diabetes- when the pancreas can't create enough insulin -Chronic Pancreatitis- injury of the peancreas, or destruction often from excessive drinking or smoking; poor absortion of nutrients, bleeding from stomach
-Adrenal glands- regulate your response to stress -Pineal gland - not fully understood but creates melatonin that affects our sleep, metabolism and sexual development -Pancreas- has a hormone insulin that regulates blood sugar -Thymus- helps body fight off infections - t cells -Ovaries and testes- glands produce hormones that help us reach maturity fight off infections and stay energetic and live more sex cells
