World War II
The Battle of Stalingrad This major battle is between nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. It started July 17, 1942 and ended February 2, 1943. This was said to be one of the bloodiest battles in history. Nearly two million deaths were recorded during this battle. Germany lost which proved to be a major victory for thhe Allies. It took place in the city of Stalingrad and the Eastern Front.
The Battle of Midway The Battle of Midway was fought near the U.S. mid-Pacific base at Midway. Prior to this action, Japan possessed general naval superiority over the United States and could usually choose where and when to attack. After Midway, the two opposing fleets were essentially equals, and the United States soon took the offensive. This battle started June 4, 1942 and ended June 7, 1942.4-7
The Battle of Guadalcanal This battle started on August 7, 1942. The Japanese defeat at the Battle of Midway had forced the Imperial Army to reconsider their plans of expansion and concentrate on consolidating the territory that they had captured. The Japanese hierarchy in Tokyo refused to admit defeat and ordered yet more men to Guadalcanal. In mid-November 1942, planes from Henderson attacked a convoy of ships bringing Japanese reinforcements to Guadalcanal. Eleven were transport ships, six were sunk, one was severely damaged and four had to be beached. Only 2,000 men reached Guadalcanal - but few had any supplies as they had been lost at sea. On December 1942, the emperor ordered a withdrawal from Guadalcanal. This withdrawal took place from January to February 1943 and the Americans learned that even in defeat that the Japanese were a force to be reckoned with. 11,000 Japanese soldiers were taken off the island in the so-called 'Tokyo Night Express'. America had won.
The German Invasion of France This took place between May 1940 and December 1944. Several departments along the Italian border were occupied by Italian troops, while areas along the Belgian frontier were administered by the German occupation authorities in Brussels. The entire Atlantic coastline was declared a military zone, placing it off-limits to French civilians. Both the unoccupied and the occupied portions of France remained legally under the control of the Vichy (government formed by France) government. When the Allies invaded North Africa on 8 November 1942, the Germans and Italians immediately occupied the remaining free part of France. The liberation of France began on 6 June 1944 with the Allied forces landing on D-Day and the Battle of Normandy and ended in December. Paris itself was liberated on 25 August 1944.
