OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM -- Army Sgt. Osvaldo Ortiz sleeps next to the transfer case and gear of his fallen friend aboard a C-17 Globemaster III bound for Dover Air Force Base, Del., on June 29. Ortiz is accompanying the remains to the base and eventually back to the fallen soldier's home in Puerto Rico.
SGT Anderson watched his best friend die while on a convoy in Iraq. His freind, SSG Wilson, took SGT Anderson's position on the convoy when it was hit by an IED and then ambushed. Six US Soldiers died on that convoy, twelve wounded.
Generally called a 'battlefield cross' — and, more recently, a 'fallen soldier’s cross' — this time-honored display has become a powerful symbol of loss for a generation of Americans shielded from photos of flag-draped coffins that bear the remains of fallen troops. Above, paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division pay their respects to Spring Hill, Fl.-native Pfc. Cody Grater, 19, who was killed in action July 27.
This statue currently stands outside the Iraqi palace
