•Caste mobility – very uncommon, lower class has to do higher class work, higher class has to be very “bad”

Varna – four classes of society, means “color” and “veil” which symbolizes the qualities of human nature and the divine spirit inside one’s soul
•Gandhi (1869-1948) – raised Hindu in India, merchant class, very educated, loved by almost all of India, called mahatma “great soul,” assassinated 1948
•Untouchables – today known as Harijans, occasionally called dalits, lowest class, not technically in the caste system because they are not direct descendent of the Brahman, declared illegal in 1949 after Gandhi’s death
Brahman – the original highest class that invented the caste system because they thought that there needed to be separation between certain individuals
•K.R. Narayanan – the first Untouchable to make it the highest office (10th president of India), he was elected on July 25, 1997
Jatis – another name for the caste system, it is form of social organization that preselects everyone’s social status before they are even born
Vaishya – merchant and farmer class
Brahmins – the priests or spiritual class
Kshatriya – nobility or royalty class
Shudras – the servant class
