My Story Like many African Americans I am not exactly sure where my people come from. They worked and lived on plantations in South Carolina for many years. Some of my ancestors also include Cherokee Indians from the Iroquois tribe and Hispanics from Cuba. When slavery ended, in the 1900’s the great migration caused many African Americans to move to the North. They moved mostly to booming cities, to look for job opportunities. With the motivation of Freedon rights Activists like Marcus Garvey, Thurgood Marshall, Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. African Americans fought for equality up into the seventies.
This race has accomplished a lot and has helped to gain equal right for many minorities in the United states. Now that dicrimination is not encouraged in the United States African Americans have just as much opputunity as anyone else. Today we are able to do and become whatever we please.
